The place
The house was built in 1852 for a timber merchant. A camphor tree planted around the same time shades the courtyard and gives the house its name. The rooms keep their marble fireplaces and interior shutters.
Ceilings on the upper floor rise to eleven and a half feet. Breakfast is served in the courtyard under the camphor tree, or in the open kitchen on rainy days.
The neighbourhood
The jazz clubs of Frenchmen Street are a five-minute walk. Crescent Park follows the river three blocks from the house. The French Quarter begins ten minutes away on foot, past Esplanade Avenue.
